HEALDSBURG CITY

Need a Food Facility Plan for Your SONOMA County Permit?

Healdsburg City Guide

Navigating the health permit process in Sonoma County can feel overwhelming for new and existing restaurant owners, but understanding the local requirements is the first step toward a smooth opening or renewal.

Sonoma County’s Environmental Management Department oversees food facility permits, requiring approved plans, kitchen inspections, and compliance with health and safety codes before a restaurant can legally operate. This guide walks business owners through the essential steps — from submitting facility plans and scheduling inspections to understanding permit fees and renewal timelines — so they can move through the approval process with confidence rather than confusion.

Because requirements can vary slightly by county, this guide is designed to give Sonoma-area restaurant owners a clear, practical starting point before diving into county-specific forms and procedures.

City of Healdsburg Planning & Building

Why this agency is necessary? Issues building permits, schedules inspections, and enforces building codes for projects inside Sonoma city limits. The City has a Building Forms page and a page for scheduling inspections. Note that the City’s online permit system covers some Planning and Public Works permits, but it didn’t list building permits in the summary I saw, so ask Building how to submit.

Sonoma County Environmental Health

Why this agency is necessary? The county health department reviews and approves plans for new and remodeled retail food facilities before construction begins. Its Plan Check Packet covers flooring, plumbing layouts, mechanical exhaust ventilation, and sanitation requirements, and includes a list of local companies that draw facility plans.

Wastewater / Sanitary Authority

Why this agency is necessary? Establishes grease-interceptor regulations, sizing, location, sewer connection, approval, and maintenance requirements for the specific property. In Healdsburg, the City handles the sewer connection, and I couldn’t confirm the grease requirements, so ask Building which department sets them.
